bazooka A heavy weapon - technically, a giant rocket launcher - which is often used by mobile
suits to attack ships. Its variants include the 240mm Zaku Bazooka, the 360mm Giant Bazooka used by the MS-09 Dom, and the
Gundam's Hyper Bazooka. beam rifle A compact mega particle cannon, as powerful as a
battleship's main gun, which can be carried by a mobile suit. The rifle's energy is supplied by a battery-like device called
an energy capacitor (or E-cap, for short), rather than the mobile suit's own reactor, and can only be replenished aboard a
carrier ship. First developed by the Federation Forces, this weapon is used by the RX-78 Gundam and RX-77 Guncannon, and later
by the Principality of Zeon's MS-14 Gelgoog. beam saber A mobile suit melee weapon originally developed
by the Federation Forces, and first employed by the RX-78 Gundam. The beam saber's blade, formed from high-energy Minovsky
particles, can slice through any armor in a split second. This weapon becomes a standard item in the RGM-79 GM, MS-14 Gelgoog,
YMS-15 Gyan, and other mobile suits produced at the end of the One Year War. bit While Minovsky particle interference makes conventional remote control impossible, the psycommu system allows
newtypes to control remote weapons via their amplified psycho waves. The "bits" used by the MAN-08 Elmeth are independent
fighting machines, powered by small fusion reactors and armed with mega particle cannons, which can be used to surround and
destroy unsuspecting enemies. [Gundam]
core block system The cockpit block of the RX-78 Gundam, and
its fellow prototype mobile suits, can eject and unfold into a small aerospace fighter. While ill-suited for real combat,
this "core fighter" provides an emergency escape mechanism for both the pilot and the test data stored in the mobile suit's
computer. While the core block system is omitted from the Federation's mass-produced mobile suits for cost reasons, it's later
re-used in the RX-78GP01 Gundam Zephyranthes. [Gundam, Gundam 0083] heat hawk The heat hawk (short for "tomahawk") is an axe-like weapon used by the MS-06 Zaku II. Its blade is heated
using power from the mobile suit's generator, allowing it to slice through the armor of space warships. heat
rod This deceptively-named device is actually an electrical weapon, a multi-segmented
whip which delivers a powerful electric shock. The heat rod is part of the built-in arsenal of the MS-07B Gouf, which uses
it to damage the internal systems of enemy mobile suits and stun their pilots. The MS-07B3 Gouf Custom is equipped with a
simplified version, essentially a magnetic grapple attached to a cable. [Gundam, 08th MS Team] heat saber Like the heat hawk, this is a melee weapon heated by a mobile suit's generator. The heat saber's sword-like
blade is well-suited to close combat against enemy mobile suits. The MS-07B Gouf and MS-09 Dom are each equipped with their
own characteristic heat sabers. I-field When Minovsky particles are released into open space,
they align into a three-dimensional grid called an I-field. This phenomenon has many useful applications, and it can even
be used to deflect enemy beam weapons. The MA-08 Big Zam, AMA-X2 Neue Ziel, and RX-78GP03 Gundam Dendrobium are each equipped
with an I-field barrier which protects them from incoming beam attacks. [Gundam, Gundam 0083] laser propulsion system
This system uses an external power source - namely, a powerful laser - to heat a spacecraft's
propellant. More efficient than the thermonuclear rocket engines used by space warships, this mechanism enables spacecraft
to minimize their propellant consumption as they launch out of lunar orbit. Major lunar cities, like Von Braun, have laser
ignition stations for boosting transport ships into space. The assault carrier Albion is one of the few military vessels designed
to use this system. [Gundam 0083] Luna Titanium A super-strong alloy developed by Federation
Forces researchers at the asteroid base Luna II. The RX-78 Gundam, RX-77 Guncannon, RX-75 Guntank, and early pre-production
mobile suits like the RX-79[G] Gundam and RGM-79[G] GM are all protected by Luna Titanium armor, making them highly resistant
to enemy missiles and machine guns. However, this material proves too expensive to be used on mass-produced mobile suits.
After the One Year War, renegade Principality of Zeon forces succeed in duplicating - and improving on - Luna Titanium, which
they call "Gundarium" in honor of their famous adversary. machine gun The
standard weapon of the MS-06 Zaku is a 120mm machine gun, a rapid-fire weapon as powerful as a tank cannon. Machine guns of
various kinds, with calibers ranging from 75 to 120mm, are a universally popular mobile suit weapon. However, they're of limited
effectiveness against the RX-78 Gundam and other mobile suits with Luna Titanium armor. magnet coating A special process applied to the joints of the RX-78-2 Gundam piloted by Amuro Ray. The magnet coating treatment
reduces friction and increases response time, enabling the Gundam to keep up with Amuro's ever-faster newtype reflexes. This
technology is also used in the RX-78NT1 "Alex" and other experimental Gundams. [Gundam, Gundam 0080] manipulator
The technical term for a mobile suit's hand. In addition to carrying weapons, manipulators
can be used for opening airlock hatches and lifting the pilot to and from the mobile suit's cockpit (as demonstrated in the
first episode of Mobile Suit Gundam). mega particle cannon The standard weapon of the Universal Century
era. When Minovsky particles are compressed in a device called an energy condenser, they fuse into massive, fast-moving mega
particles, which can then be fired in a devastating beam of energy. Until the creation of the beam rifle, these weapons can
only be used by warships, mobile armors, or amphibious mobile suits with large water-cooled reactors. Minovsky
craft This lift-generating system allows a warship or mobile armor to float effortlessly
in Earth's atmosphere. The Minovsky craft system generates an I-field beneath the vessel, which pushes against the ground
and counteracts the pull of gravity. This I-field cushion also serves to protect the vessel during atmospheric re-entry. The
assault carriers White Base and Albion, and the mobile armors Adzam and Apsaras, are equipped with this Minovsky craft system.
[Gundam, 08th MS Team, Gundam 0083] Minovsky particle The magical subatomic particle behind all
the Gundam world's weird science. Minovsky particles are generated by the same helium-3 fusion reaction that powers warships
and mobile suits. When scattered in the air or in open space, they block radio waves and nullify radar. As a result, combat
is now limited to visual range, and distant foes can be identified only as vague heat sources. mobile armor A non-humanoid fighting machine based on mobile suit technology, but larger, faster, and more powerful than
a standard mobile suit. Thanks to their huge size and high power output, mobile armors can be equipped with special features
like psycommu interfaces, I-field barriers, Minovsky craft systems, and devastating mega particle cannons. mobile
suit A highly manueverable humanoid fighting machine, designed for short-range combat
in an age when the Minovsky particle has made radar obsolete. The typical mobile suit stands about 60 feet tall - ten times
human size - and is operated by a single pilot from a cockpit in its torso. While the first mobile suits were created for
space combat, the basic design proves flexible enough to be adapted for land and sea warfare as well. mono-eye
The distinctive main sensor used by the Principality of Zeon's mobile suits. The mono-eye
is a rail-mounted camera, which can slide back and forth to cover a wide field of view. This gives the Principality's mobile
suits the appearance of a giant cyclops, adding to their psychological impact. normal suit A traditional space suit, as opposed to a giant mobile suit. Like the space suits worn by modern-day astronauts,
the normal suit protects its wearer from the lethal environment of outer space. As they go into battle, warship crews will
often don these suits as a precautionary measure. pilot suit A lightweight type of normal suit designed for combat
pilots. These near-skintight space suits provide a minimum of impediment to the pilot's movements. Still, a handful of reckless
pilots - among them Char Aznable, the infamous "Red Comet" - prefer to risk a nasty death in space, rather than allow even
this small interference with their work. psycommu system In their investigation of newtype phenomena,
the researchers of the Flanagan Institute discovered that newtypes produce powerful mental emanations, akin to electrical
brainwaves, which they termed "psycho waves." They then developed a mind-machine interface called the psycommu ("psycho-communicator")
system, which detects these psycho waves and translates them into computer commands. Thanks to the psycommu system, newtypes
can direct remote weapons and control mobile armors via thought alone. Solar Flare System A strategic weapon used by the Federation Forces in their attack on the space fortress Solomon. Like the
weapon devised by the ancient inventor Archimedes, this array of mirrors focuses the sun's light into a single devastating
point, capable of carving through solid rock. The Solar Flare System consists of four million individually adjustable mirrors,
computer-coordinated to form an immense lens tens of kilometers across. [Gundam] Solar Ray System The ultimate weapon of the Principality of Zeon. The Solar Ray consists of an entire space colony converted
into a giant laser cannon, which is capable of blasting an enemy fleet at a range of tens of thousands of kilometers. Since
its key components are still in the testing stage, the Solar Ray can only be activated once. [Gundam] Solar
System II A refined version of the Solar Flare System used at the Battle of Solomon,
which is deployed by the Federation Forces in U.C. 0083 to stop a runaway space colony. The Solar System II consists of only
408,000 mirrors, but thanks to improved materials and more sophisticated control software, its destructive power is equal
to that of the original. [Gundam 0083] vulcan gun A multi-barreled machine gun installed in the head
of most Federation Forces mobile suits. Though its range and firepower are very limited, this rapid-fire weapon is useful
for driving back enemies, and a lucky shot can take out a mobile suit's sensors or other vulnerable components.
